Vortex Imaging introduces the Vortex360, a CT-like ultrasound device powered by NVIDIA Jetson, enabling advanced in-office diagnostics and expanding access to medical imaging.
Vortex Imaging, an innovative medical imaging device developer from Israel, has unveiled a groundbreaking solution to enhance diagnostic capabilities in medical offices. Partnering with NVIDIA, Vortex has developed the Vortex360, a compact and powerful device that brings CT-like ultrasound imaging to healthcare providers, according to the NVIDIA blog.
The Need for Accessible Imaging
Despite technological advancements, many medical professionals still face challenges accessing diagnostic imaging tools within their offices. Traditional CT and MRI scans demand substantial infrastructure and are often limited to hospitals or specialized centers. Although portable, ultrasound machines typically rely on operator expertise and offer limited views, necessitating patient referrals to external facilities, delaying diagnosis and treatment.
Introducing the Vortex360
The Vortex360 addresses these limitations by combining advanced diagnostic capabilities with user-friendly design. Roughly the size of a gaming console, the device is easily maneuverable, docking into a waist-high cart for in-office diagnostics. Utilizing NVIDIA Jetson for edge computing and cloud-based GPUs for image reconstruction, the Vortex360 provides high-quality 3D images swiftly, revolutionizing the point-of-care imaging landscape.
Advanced Cloud-Based Imaging
Central to the Vortex system is the Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) technology, originally developed for geophysical exploration. By modeling entire acoustic wavefields, FWI allows for the reconstruction of high-resolution images, surpassing traditional ultrasound methods. The Vortex360 simplifies the process by using reflection datasets, enabling high-quality image generation without complex hardware.
Performance and Scalability
Leveraging the power of NVIDIA GPUs, Vortex transitioned from CPU-based architectures to a GPU-only model, significantly enhancing the speed and efficiency of image processing. Edge computing via NVIDIA Jetson improved performance by 20 times compared to prior CPU-only solutions, facilitating immediate imaging at the point of care.
Expanding Imaging Access
The Vortex360 aims to democratize medical imaging, making it faster and more accessible. Its ease of use allows for in-clinic diagnostics, reducing referral delays and accelerating clinical decisions. Moreover, its adaptability suits rural and remote areas, where minimal training is required. The standardized datasets generated are ideal for AI model training, further supporting clinical decision-making.
Looking Ahead
By integrating edge processing with scalable cloud computing, Vortex seeks to redefine traditional imaging hardware, making it more accurate, accessible, and affordable. As a member of the NVIDIA Inception program, Vortex continues to develop AI-powered imaging features, aiming to transform the future of diagnostic imaging.
