Georgetown University Taps Lehigh Endowment for New CIO

Kristin Agatone

Georgetown University named a new CIO Tuesday. Kristin Agatone will take the helm of the institution’s $3.7 billion endowment.

Effective September 15, Agatone succeeds Michael Barry, who served as CIO of the Georgetown from 2011 until this February, when he took up the role as CIO of the Johns Hopkins University Endowment.

Chris Gill, a managing director at the Georgetown endowment, is currently serving as interim CIO.

Agatone will oversee the university’s investment office and endowment, and will manage its investment policy, asset allocation, board communications and investment reporting, according to Georgetown University.

“We welcome the addition of Kristin to our leadership team at Georgetown,” said David Green, Georgetown’s chief operating officer, in a statement. “Her years of experience in finance in both higher education and the private sector will be invaluable as Georgetown grows and pushes forward in its mission.”

Agatone is currently CIO of Lehigh University’s $2.2 billion endowment, a role she has held since 2016. According to a news release, the Lehigh endowment nearly doubled its assets under management under Agatone’s leadership.

Agatone’s last day at Lehigh University will be July 31, Lehigh’s president Joseph Helble told faculty and staff.

“I am grateful to Kristin for her service and the ways she has strengthened the university’s future. Please join me in wishing her well as she embarks on a new chapter at Georgetown,” Helble said in a university statement.

In a statement, Agatone said she was drawn to Georgetown’s strong values and reputation, as well as its vibrant community. “It’s such a dynamic institution with a strong mission to holistically improve its students’ lives through education,” Agatone said. “That priority is immediately apparent across the entire campus.”

Previously, she was a managing director at outsourced CIO provider Summit Rock Advisors, a vice president at the Harvard Management Company—the entity that manages the endowment of Harvard University—and started her career as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and later worked at private equity firm TPG.

Agatone holds a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. While at HBS, Agatone interned with the Harvard Management Company , and found endowment investing to be her calling.

“The combination of investing with a strong mission to support students and institutions of higher learning was the perfect path for my career,” Agatone said.
