Emerald AI’s innovative software aims to optimize power usage in AI factories, helping to ease grid stress while maintaining data center performance.
Emerald AI, a startup based in Washington, D.C., is pioneering software designed to optimize power consumption during peak grid demand, while still meeting the performance needs of AI workloads in data centers. This development is crucial as many global tech hubs face extended waits for new AI factories due to the slow expansion of energy infrastructure.
Emerald AI’s Innovative Approach
The company’s Emerald Conductor platform acts as a smart intermediary between the power grid and data centers, allowing for more flexible energy usage. This flexibility is particularly vital during grid stress events, as demonstrated in a field test in Phoenix, Arizona. Here, the software successfully reduced power consumption by 25% over three hours, without sacrificing compute service quality, by managing workloads across a cluster of 256 NVIDIA GPUs.
Strategic Energy Management
Emerald AI’s approach involves orchestrating various AI workloads to adapt to grid demands. For instance, less urgent tasks like training large language models can be paused, while critical operations such as inference queries can be rerouted to data centers with less stressed grids. This strategic management not only aids in bringing data centers online faster but also helps cities avoid rolling blackouts and supports the integration of renewable energy.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects
Emerald AI, part of the NVIDIA Inception program and backed by NVentures, recently announced over $24 million in seed funding. Their successful trials in Phoenix, conducted in collaboration with NVIDIA, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and the Salt River Project, form part of the EPRI’s DCFlex initiative aimed at enhancing data center flexibility.
The trial highlighted the potential of AI data centers to act as grid allies by dynamically adjusting power consumption. This adaptability is critical in states like Arizona, which are experiencing significant data center growth. Emerald AI’s technology allows centers to adjust their energy usage in response to grid conditions, potentially unlocking significant new capacity for data centers without extensive new infrastructure investments.
The Road Ahead
With electricity demand from data centers projected to more than double by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency, Emerald AI’s solutions are timely. They offer a pathway for data centers to maintain operational flexibility and efficiency, even as energy demands intensify. Looking forward, Emerald AI plans to expand its trials and continue refining its technology in collaboration with NVIDIA, ensuring that data centers can be both energy-efficient and high-performing.
