GitHub introduces new features for duplicating issues across repositories and creating issues from anywhere in the UI, enhancing workflow efficiency.

GitHub has rolled out significant updates aimed at enhancing user productivity and workflow management within its platform, according to the GitHub Blog. These updates include the ability to duplicate issues across repositories and create new issues from anywhere within the GitHub user interface.

Duplicate Issues Across Repositories

One of the standout features is the new ‘Duplicate issue’ option, which allows users to quickly duplicate any issue. This option appears at the bottom of the right sidebar of an issue. By selecting this, users open a new issue form prefilled with the original issue’s details, such as title, description, assignees, labels, type, projects, and milestone. This feature aims to streamline the process of reusing issue formats or recurring tasks without the need for manual copying and pasting, thereby enhancing efficiency.

Users can also change the destination repository before creating the duplicated issue, facilitating the easy copying of issues across different repositories. Additionally, users have the flexibility to edit details before finalizing the new issue to better align with their workflow needs.

Create Issues from Anywhere

To further enhance productivity, GitHub now allows users to create a new issue from any page within the platform. This is facilitated by the ‘New issue’ button located in the header, which opens the issue creation modal instantly, thus enabling users to capture ideas or tasks as they arise without disrupting their workflow.

API Support for Advanced Search

In support of advanced issue management, GitHub has announced that all issue queries will default to using advanced search from September 4, 2025. This change follows the earlier introduction of opt-in support for advanced issue searches via the API. The update includes several improvements, such as the ability to close issues programmatically as duplicates using the REST API, and the removal of the GraphQL field Issue.timeline, which is replaced by Issue.timelineItems.

Moreover, within a project, issues are now ordered alphabetically when sorted by the ‘Parent issue’ field, and users can reorder fields from the custom fields menu on the projects settings page.

These updates are part of GitHub’s ongoing efforts to enhance its platform’s functionality and user experience. Users are encouraged to join the discussion and share their feedback in the GitHub Community.
