CalPERS Seeks Capital Markets Deputy CIO


The California Public Employees’ Retirement System seeks a deputy CIO to oversee the pension fund’s public market asset investments, including public equities, fixed income and portfolio diversification strategies, according to a job posting.  

The deputy CIO for capital markets will report to Stephen Gilmore, the CalPERS CIO. Dan Bienvenue held this role and served as interim CIO of CalPERS during two CIO transitions, serving at the fund for nearly 21 years before leaving in April.  

“The DCIO will provide thought leadership, identify emerging trends, develop forward-thinking investment approaches, ensure a strong governance and organizational culture exists for investment decision making, ensure alignment with CalPERS long-term strategic objectives, and coordinate inclusion of public market asset class research, analysis, and information into Total Fund investment decision making and drive our CalPERS mission,” the job posting states.  

The position will be open until the last day of each month, until the role is filled. The first cutoff is May 31.

Requirements for the position (indicated as the California State Teachers’ Retirement System on the California jobs website, but actually for CalPERS) include: 

  • Two years of experience in California state service performing the duties equivalent to investment director, or a minimum of five years managing a complex investment portfolio; 
  • Ability to manage a large, complex investment program; 
  • Knowledge of multi-asset investing; and 
  • Demonstration of a high degree of integrity, honesty and ethical behavior.  

CalPERS, the largest pension fund in the U.S., manages $527.3 billion in assets, as of March 31, including $205.3 billion in public equity and $156.2 billion in fixed-income investments. The fund manages retirement assets for more than 2 million California public employees.
