Cronos (CRO) EVM announces a significant reduction in block time, aiming to enhance transaction speed and user experience for DeFi, gaming, and payments.
The Cronos (CRO) EVM is set to undergo a transformative upgrade with a targeted 10x reduction in block time, enhancing its capabilities in high-frequency, real-time decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming, and payment applications. This development is part of Cronos’s commitment to optimizing its blockchain network, as reported by Cronos.
Cronos EVM’s Block Time Leap
The planned reduction will see the current block time of 5.6 seconds drop to sub-second levels, making Cronos EVM one of the fastest and most efficient blockchains. This improvement builds upon recent enhancements, such as BlockSTM, a parallel execution engine that significantly increases transaction throughput by allowing concurrent processing.
These advancements are expected to result in higher transaction throughput and ultra-fast responsiveness for decentralized applications (dApps) and end-users, bolstering support for high-frequency use cases like real-time DeFi, gaming, and payments.
Rollout Schedule
The rollout of the reduced block time is set to begin with testnet implementation in the week of June 16, 2025. Builders will have the opportunity to test the new capabilities once the update is live. If successful, the mainnet implementation is tentatively planned for early July 2025.
Cronos encourages all builders and infrastructure providers to evaluate their applications on the Cronos testnet to ensure readiness for the update.
Community Feedback and Future Plans
To facilitate a smooth transition, Cronos is seeking feedback from dApp developers, validators, and ecosystem partners. Projects with logic, indexing, or time-sensitive operations dependent on the current block time are particularly encouraged to provide input by June 18, 2025.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to scale Cronos for the forthcoming wave of Web3 adoption, positioning the platform to meet the growing needs of developers, users, and builders in the blockchain space.
The enhancements to Cronos EVM underline its dedication to providing a high-performance, low-latency blockchain network, paving the way for innovative applications in the ever-evolving digital economy.
