OpenAI and Meta Platforms are reportedly in discussions with India’s Reliance Industries to form AI partnerships, aiming to expand their artificial intelligence offerings in the country. Potential collaborations include distributing ChatGPT through Reliance Jio and hosting AI models locally to ensure data remains within India.
OpenAI and Meta Platforms have engaged in separate talks with Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest conglomerates, to explore potential partnerships that could significantly enhance their artificial intelligence (AI) presence in the country, according to a report by The Information.
One of the key discussions involves a potential collaboration between Reliance Jio, the telecommunications arm of Reliance Industries, and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot. This partnership could make ChatGPT more accessible to a broader audience in India, leveraging Jio’s extensive network and customer base.
In addition to distribution, OpenAI is reportedly considering reducing the subscription price of ChatGPT to as low as several dollars per month, down from the current $20. While it remains unclear whether this pricing strategy has been discussed with Reliance, such a move could make the AI tool more affordable for Indian users.
Reliance Industries has also explored the possibility of selling OpenAI’s AI models to its enterprise customers through an application programming interface (API). Furthermore, the conglomerate is considering hosting and running OpenAI’s AI models locally within India. This approach would ensure that the data of Indian customers remains within the country, addressing data privacy and sovereignty concerns.
A significant part of these discussions revolves around Reliance’s ambitious plan to build a three-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which is touted to be the largest data center in the world. This facility could potentially host and run AI models from both Meta and OpenAI, providing a robust infrastructure for AI development and deployment in India.
Meta Platforms has declined to comment on the report, while OpenAI and Reliance Industries have not yet responded to requests for comments.
Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is a diversified conglomerate with interests in petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail, and green energy.
